{blp} The Size Guide - Choosing Your Photographs

Most of my customers will know that I don't do any pressure selling techniques when it comes to my portrait sessions.

I don't believe in the nature of being made to feel "if you don't choose and buy these now - we will delete them" however, a lot of people go for something smaller and some people cannot visualise something in their house at different sizes.

So when I purchased this handy little tool that allows me to show how big your images actually are it was perfect.

Most people have a fireplace in their house, or if not you know what a fireplace looks like - they normally are a standard size - perfect!

For Desks and mantel's I normally advise going for a 10x8 or at the smallest a 7x5. I do not do 6x4 as an extra inch really does make all the difference!

For Wall Products its about choosing something bigger, something to create a piece of art on your wall. Whether it is a frame you already have purchased and you are replacing the frame. Or something special. Here we look through the step-by-steps of different sizes.

This Photograph shows a 10x8 Print Only above a fireplace.
Did you realise how tiny it would look on the Wall, unless you have a group of them.

This Photograph shows a 20x16 Print above a fireplace.
This looks better - but be careful if buying your own frame - and if its a thin one.

If you are unsure of how big a frame is going to be, we have all the different sizes on our Wall in the Studio, you can always come and look.

If all else fails, tell us what size YOU are thinking about and we will bring it to you to try it out for size!

Another thing we find is that customers sometimes are unsure whether to go for a Framed Print or for a Canvas.

With Framed Prints, getting the frame is key.

Will it fit in the room that you are looking for?
When did we last decorate?
Will we be decorating again soon?
You do not want to pay out for a lovely frame that will not fit in, in a few months time.

Our Canvas' come with a glistening coat, which means they can be wiped with a damp cloth.

Perfect if you want to put them in the kitchen, dining room, or even in the bathroom.

{Win Your Wedding Photography} Shortlist - Kalie & Clare

Here I have a little catch up with Kalie & Clare who have been shortlisted for the {Win Your Wedding Photography} Competition. They are getting married at Barnsley Register Office on 14th October 2011


How did you meet?A Mutual friend introduced us in Chicago Rock at their gay night Camp Rock, I was out with my uncle celebrating his birthday, and Clare was out with friends. We have been inseparable ever since. I knew straight away Clare was the person I wanted to grow old with. Luckily for all of us my daughter and Clare felt the same way.


Why did you choose your Wedding Date?
We chose our Wedding Date because we initially wanted the 12th of October as it is the anniversary of the day we met, but many friends and family wouldn't be able to attend mid week. Clare's family will have to travel for the wedding and a lot of the places we enquired at had higher prices at the weekend, so we chose the Friday.

Where is your Venue?
Our venue will be the registry office in town. I always dreamed of a big church wedding like most girls, but unfortunately the church still doesn't recognize gay weddings. We looked at several lovely venues but ultimately decided the ceremony itself is more important than the setting. We just want the world to see that we are a happy fully committed family unit.

Our reception will be as traditional as any other, all our friends and family will be at the reception at the Solace. We choose this as its fairly central but also right next door to travel lodge for all the guest needing hotel rooms.


Any more information regarding the Wedding?
I will still be wearing my dream dress, Clare will be wearing a Suit. My daughter Emily and Clare's niece Claudia will be out bridesamids. Luckily my mum will be making my wedding dress and the bridesmaids outfits, wiastcoats etc. Clare is a Chef so thats the food arranged. Her friend specializes in wedding cakes so another ticked box. We dont really want to give away too much regarding colours and themes as we want to surprize our guests, but we are hoping it will be a relaxed fun celebration for everyone to enjoy and remember.


How long have you been engaged?
We got engaged in December 2010


How did the proposal come about?
We were at a friends engagement party, when Clare asked me to marry her. I immediately said yes


What would winning this competition mean to you?
Winning would mean the world to us, as any young couple working and bringing up a child know, money is always an issue, we are hoping to have a fantastic day, but not get ourselves into debt doing so. Photographs are the one thing you keep long after the day is over, we would love to have real photographs to cherish forever not rely on snapshots from friends cameras and phone to capture the special day we marry.

{Win Your Wedding Photography} Shortlist - Danny & Sam

Here I have a little catch up with Danny & Sam who have been shortlisted for the {Win Your Wedding Photography} Competition. They are getting married at Misterton Church, and then onto The Stables, High Melton on 29th March 2012.

How did you meet?
We met whilst I was on a friend's 'hen-do' funnily enough!! Danny stole my bubbles from me on the night and kept them in a safe place (hence why we are having bubbles at the wedding!!).


Why did you choose your Wedding Date?
We initially chose Friday 13th as our wedding date but had to change it because of Danny's committments to the Royal Marines.

Where is your Venue?
We are getting married in Misterton Church where we have bought our house and my parents have lived for 10 years. We are then having our evening reception at The Stables, High Melton.

Any more information regarding the Wedding?We will be having a guard of honour at the church but with a twist. We will be having Royal Marines holding silver swords but there will also be firemen holding axes as I am a retained fire-fighter in the village where we live


How long have you been engaged?We have been engaged since Christmas Day 2010

How did the proposal come about?I had no idea that Danny was going to propose as I was sat watching the soaps on Christmas Day evening when he suggested going for a walk. We trekked in the snow to the lake where we were staying in Cornwall and he set up a torch at the top of the steps looking down onto the lake. We sat in the beautiful arch way and that is when he popped the question!! Even more surprisingly, Danny had the ring that I saw 12 months before and fell in love with (he had kept it in my brother's gun cabinet for 12 months!!). When we got back to the log cabin where we were staying, our families had opened the champagne as they were all in on the whole thing!! :-)


What would winning this competition mean to you?Winning this competition would mean everything to us as we would have the memories to treasure forever (including crying over the photos when Danny has been called to duty!!). Words can't express just how amazing it would be to have you there on our special day, capturing every moment.

{Win Your Wedding Photography} Shortlist - Amy &Chris

Here I have a little catch up with Amy & Chris who have been shortlisted for the {Win Your Wedding Photography} Competition. They are getting married at Tankersley Manor Barnsley on 24th December 2011.

How did you meet?
We met in Whiltly Bay on the August Bank Holiday in 2005 through mutual friends. I went with the girls and he went with the boys and two of our friends who were a couple at the time which were the ones who brought us together luckily as chris wasnt going to go!

Why did you choose your Wedding Date?
Our wedding is on Christmas Eve this year. Neither of us chose that date, it just happend that when we went to a previous venue they mentioned that date and we both loved the idea. It also made sence to have it as family and friends would be off work and is a unique day for us as neither of us know anyone who has got married on this date!

Where is your Venue?
Our venue for the day is Tankersley Manor we will be getting married there at 1pm followed by our Wedding Breakfast then our reception.

Any more information regarding the Wedding?So far we have got everything for the wedding, my dress has been ordered and I'm waiting for the call from Julia at Elegance Bridal Studio to say its here which I cannot wait for. Chris has rented his suit from Julia's husband at Sensational Formal Hire, we have chosen bridesmaid dresses for the 6 of them, our cake and decorations which will give a really cosy feel to the day.

How long have you been engaged?
We have been engaged for just over four years, we have wanted to get married previous to this date but the cost of it all got in the way as we wanted a lot more people to be there for us during the day so we decided to stick to 30 of our closest friends and family otherwise the list would never end and can quite safely say it was the best decision we made.

How did the proposal come about?Chris decided to propose to me as he thought the time was right,we'd just bought our house and i was pregnant with our first little girl Jessica and this would almost make our little family complete.

What would winning this competition mean to you?Winning this competition would mean a lot like it would do for all the couples, not just the cost of it as this would take a lot of stress off us, but having a well known professional photographer looking after the one day you will always look back on and the one day you could never buy back as it only happens the once.

Start Up Business Workshops

One of the things I have been working on is to hold small Start Up Business Workshops, to help and inspire new business’ (or business’ who currently feel a bit lost).


The reason for doing so is because when I speak with people, photographers or other business’ I get the “but everyone is struggling, noone has the money, noone wants to spend/buy etc“.

I haven’t found this to be the case.

It could be the way I sell myself, it could be my pricing, or my open policy…it could be the work I produce, that I know my target market, or that I have a retail background. What I do know is, its a combination of them all.

So why the blog post today? Why the announcement of the guideline for the course?

The 21st June was 3years since I left my Full-Time Job, as a retail Assistant Manager, and set off into the World and Journey of Photography and Business. I worked as a Second Shooter from June 2008 to October 2009 when I set up on my own. In March 2010 I went full time Self Employed. In November 2010 we won Best Wedding Photographer for The Bridal Magazine (and are hoping to get shortlisted again!) In Jan 2011, we were shortlisted for the Wedding Idea’s Best Wedding Photographer, and were shortlisted to the Final 5. In March 2011 I opened the doors to my studio.
Its been a whirlwind 3-years. I didnt have someone with a big load of cash behind me telling me how I needed to do this that and the other, its been hard work, determination, long nights, sleepless nights and all in all great experiences. I’ve met some fantastic people – some great Bride & Grooms, and very happy customers. But sometimes its not all its cracked up to be. There are times that its a struggle, times that not everyone is happy, and how to deal with those too. For anyone in business who say’s they have stopped learning – I personally think they’re wrong.
What I plan to do on these workshops, is to look at me and how I run my business. We will go from looking at your target market, where you want to be. What type of pricing and structure would fall into your area, workflow, marketing materials and advertising – and more importantly, how to do it all on a budget!
The aim is to have a structure to cover a basis of things, but also to make it as interactive as possible. Everyone who books onto it will be able to look at giving 2 things that they would like covering – some will already be covered, others may not. It will give each the chance to talk about their business and be able to go back feeling a little more inspired.

{Girl Behind The Lens} All About Me...

Gosh - what started as a seemingly really good idea, turned into something that now means I have to sit and write and tell people about me and what I do. And then as soon as that happens you think to yourself, what if people don’t like me, what if they think I’m a sham, what if they think that I’m not XYZ like people think I am. But then I breathe a little bit and I remember - I’m human. People buy people - a lot of my clients have become really good friends. I know about their pregnancies before most of their families and friends and they ask me questions about me and my boyfriend as they’re all friends on Facebook. But it all makes more sense and totally why I have an entire personal approach to the photography that I do - its what makes me able to tell the story a lot better.

So me…its hard to write about me, let me write about you…seriously!

I am currently 26-years old, female (obviously) and girlfriend to my wonderful boyfriend James. I still live at home with Mum and Dad, although as I write this James and I are looking at houses for him to purchase and me to move into.

I am full time self employed, a little bit crazy and I’m told that’s why most people love me.

I love to have a laugh, and have a bubbly personality, in general, and I am a self confessed flirt (once upon a time) and a definite people person. However, I can get grumpy and sad (I’ll explain more about this soon) and love a good cry as the next hormonal woman - however a lot of who I am is more about the life choices, decisions and what I have gone through to get to me.

Now everyone kept saying “I don’t want to pry - I just want to know more about you personally” so therefore, there should be no holds really barred.

Most people know I don’t take things lying down, unless I really have to. So it will be surprising for most people to know that I was bullied for about 13-years. This still makes me uncomfortable in certain circumstances and its another reason why I’m louder, and apparently funnier around certain people than I am in others. Not many people get to know the 100% bottom line that is the real me. One of my friends said I let everyone have about 95% and the other 5% is kept for me. Some people might know a different 95% than the next person but no-one fully knows me 100% - I’m not sure I agree with that.

I have Endometriosis. Now men all I have to say is….it only affects women (now they all run away screaming and covering their eyes) however it on the other hand means two things. I’m generally in pain, and on strong drugs (that’s one) and in the future I may or may not be able to have babies and may need IVF. However, it is also lovely to know that one of my Brides (Amy) has the same, very severe and has just given birth to gorgeous baby Alfie, after falling pregnant naturally. These are things to think about in years to come, and I will not be a pregnant photographer for a long while yet. As much as I have loved following Julia Boggio’s I carried a Watermelon Blog, I’m not in no rush to write my own yet.

I suffer from depression. Currently I am off medication and functioning fine, I get stressed relatively easy in the grand scheme of things, unless I am shooting a Wedding, then I’m generally chilled out. I however, have clinical depression and due to the endometriosis and long-term pain they all go hand in hand. I am lucky to know and understand when I need to be back on my medication, and have currently been 10 months medication free.

I am a good listener. And also people seem to trust me, with their deepest secrets. I could probably cause the start of World War Three with some of the things I know - but I am not one of these people who will use things against people. I’m not nasty and don’t see the point in being nasty to get revenge. But sometimes I can be a bitch. I’m human.

So now lets get onto the randomness:

I can roll my tongue.
I can touch my nose with my tongue.
I can speak random words in Maltese and Filipino
I sang at the Millennium Dome (now 02 Arena) when I was at school, as part of “Our Town Story”
Music wise, I was born in the wrong era, and should have been a 50’s/60’s child.
I can sing, when I try and need to - but can sing badly out of tune in the car but that’s allowed.
I have lots of allergies, including most antibiotics, and opiates (codeine, morphine based drugs)
I have never broken a bone in my body that I am aware of
I am my own biggest critique
I doubt myself
I get self conscious
I can be quite spiritual
I have my tarot cards read at least once every 6months
My eyes are blue, but they change colour because I'm weird like that.
I have a really wonky nose considering I've never broken it.

This has probably given people more food for thought or to ask questions etc, if you have a question you would like to ask - then please let a note with it in!

{blp} Bridal Shoot at Bawtry Hall

A few weeks ago I signed up to do the White Media Ltd Wedding Fayre at Bawtry Hall, Doncaster.After speaking with Sue a lot regarding what is happening at Bawtry Hall and how they have newly opened it for Bridal Receptions, and viewing online the Stunning Gardens, I enquired as to whether Emma, would mind if I went along, with a "bride" to take some shots, that not only I could use to get a feel of the venue - but also for them to use.

Emma was really up for that, and we organised the photoshoot for Thursday 2nd June 2011 - that was that...then onto the Planning!

I couldn't believe how much my idea went from being a small idea,
to being a large idea with a "Oh My! How did it get this big?"

By the 2nd June we had:
5 models
5 "theme" of brides to show the venue can work with anyone

1 make-up artist in the form of Emma from Pokadot

1 photographer

A lot of props and things loaned to us for the shoot
and 2 assistant photographers

Here are a small selection of Photographs taken on the day - we are looking for blogs who would like to blog each individial theme of bride - for inspiration - help and also to blog the fantastic offer that Bawtry Hall currently have for Brides currently without a Venue!

Theme 1 : Boho Style

Our Boho Style Bride was Amy, the owner of Serendipity Bridal Boutique, who loaned us the dresses for the day. She stepped in at last minute as the model had cancelled on us the night before, just as I was picking up the dresses, we called upon her Mum to cover her shop whilst she came to model for us!

The Necklace from Bridal Designs and hair piece was models own.

Theme 2: Edgy Bride

Our original Idea for the Edgy Bride was to have my old workfriend Kim, who is heavily tattoo'd, unfortunately for us, but nice for her, Kim's hubby decided to whisk her away for a lovely week away leaving us without our model. However an ad on Model Mayhem was answered when the gorgeous Stephanie said that she would do it. Teamed with a short black bridesmaid dress, the gorgeous dahlia headpiece from Tantrums & Tiara's, Jewellery by Bridal Designs and Bunting from Little Bundles Bunting we were set.

Throw in some Tattoo Balls from Cherry Pie Lane and we're set.
Shoes however, are mine - and we took them on the off chance that they may go with the outfit.
Luckily the model had the same size shoe as me!

Theme 3: Classic Bride

Amy the previous owner of "Its Your Choc" decided that she wanted to come and join in the fun on the shoot, and was our Classic Bride. Again wearing Jewellery from Bridal Designs, and a bouquet of faux flowers from a home interior store it is surprising what you can "throw together" - the headpiece was a band from Primark!

Theme 4: Vintage BrideClaire modelled our Vintage look, in a skintight lace dress, it was absolutely boiling and we shoehorned her into this dress. Teamed with Mambo from LouLouBelle and the beautiful Heirloom Bouquet from Tiny Gems her look was completed with Jewellery by Bridal Designs

We also used some of the Mr & Mrs Bunting from Little Bundles Bunting for some of the shots.
Claire was married last year and had the fabulous Chris Chambers take her Wedding Photography.

Theme 5: Fun Bride

When Dani messaged me and told me she wanted to model, I knew she had to be our "Fun Bride"
The idea was fun makeup, fun pictures
and a totally different dress to what she is going to wear when she gets married.

I met Dani at a Wedding Fayre, where her, and her best friend Lizzy went on to book me
I cannot wait to shoow Dani's real pictures, but we're keeping her away from Balloons!!

We had her with Little Bundles Bunting and the story of what happened to the Balloons from Making It Perfect will all be revealed on a biiiiger blog post!

Theme 6: Impromptu Bride!Theme 6 wasnt really a theme....Hannah from Lifeline Photography came along to shoot with myself and Maria from Maria Calton Photography, then after falling in love with the Vintage Theme Dress she wanted to try it on. I said Ok but she had to come model.

Out she came wearing the Mambo, a Pink Flower Bouquet I had made and her Biker Boots
Yes we were set!

I want to give a massive thank you to absolutely everyone who helped out yesterday.
Maria has just dropped off her Images for me to look at and then I will be recieving some from Hannah soon. I was very tired yesterday and we had glorious weather for it.

{Win Your Wedding Photography} One Month To Go - and the Shortlist Panel

Here we are one month into the Win Your Wedding Photography Competition, with one month left to go, how exciting.

I recieved an Email from Lucy a few days after her Mum's Wedding to say Thank you and asked if she minded if I shared it with you all - of course she didnt have a problem, and here it is.

Hi Adele,
I just wanted to thank you for all your support on Friday 29th April at my mums wedding as you were a fantastic support to us. You not only did a professional job with the photography but assisted us in preparing for the other arrangements on the day from the how to walk down the isle, to finding the first dance song. All of this was of course over an above what had been asked of you.

Lucy was in the room helping her mum get ready, who on the Royal Wedding had a dress similar in style to the new Duchess' - the Bride was told that her dress "wasnt in fashion" and would "struggle to find one" I bet they're not saying that now!

It was an aboslutely beautiful day, and I am so glad that Lucy took the time to message me, and I cannot wait to find out Pauline & Gary's reaction to their Wedding Photographs - here are a couple of sneak peeks!

The Wedding was held at Mount Pleasant Doncaster, on Friday April 29th in the afternoon.

{Pre Wedding Shoot} Sneaky Peek! Sophie & Adam

I thought I'd share with you a few pictures of the sneaky peek pre-wedding shoot I had a couple of weeks ago with Sophie and Adam at the Dower House Hotel and Spa, Knaesborough

The Letters were provided by http://www.bigpopslettershop.co.uk/ and they were laid down as they would not stand on the grass! (it was a bit uneven!)

I had a lot of giggles with these two, and I cannot wait to photograph their wedding in October.
From apparant silver thongs and hotpants from Adam, to lots of other bits that I dont want to mention (incase it spoils any surprises!) but it should be a really good day!

Sophie & Adam saw me at a Wedding Fayre in February 2010 and then booked me some 12 months later! - And Sophie remembered me because I gave her sweeties!

{blp} Food Photography at the Shay Stadium

A few weeks ago I recieved an email from Catherine at the Shay Stadium, Halifax about the Wedding Fayre that they had organised for the 15th of May 2011, which I was happy to attend.

A couple of days later I was asked if I would mind going along to the stadium, to take some photographs of the room,
and the food that they produce for the Weddings,
Parties and Events that they organise there.

I didnt try or taste any of the food,
but I have to say it looks Scrummy!

This was the first time I've really photographed food in this setting and I have to say I loved it!
