[Tips] Wedding Day Timings, and the hidden time drains.

Well your Wedding Date is getting closer and everyone is asking about timings, so what should happen when?

Being a Wedding Photographer I see lots of different things, and different venues do have different "rules" regarding timings, and a lot depends on whether or not you are having a Church Wedding or a Civil Ceremony - and whether or not there is a drive from your Venue to the Reception Venue, or it is all in the same place.

There are two things I find that tend to run behind on the Wedding Day - Bridal Preparations and the First Dance!

So I thought I would follow along, with some helpful advice of tips and timings throughout the day, as this will help keep you as stress-free as possible.

Think about Hair and Make-up, are they coming to you or are you going to the Salon? Is there just you to get ready, or is Mums and Bridesmaids having theirs done too? Is there one person doing it all or two? All these things are relevant. Depending on the time you are getting married don't be surprised if your hair and makeup preparations start as early as 8am - if not before!

Depending on your dress, and depending on whether there is a drive to the venue - aim to get in your Dress at least 1 hour before the ceremony! (Or 1 hour before the car is collecting you) this means if hair and makeup are running late, or something else is on the morning, you still have plenty of time. Your dress shop will more than likely to tell you that you need to "settle in" to your dress to make sure you are feeling comfortable before you walk down the aisle.

If you are driving to the ceremony, the car company will always quote you a little bit longer. Depending on the car, they don't go as fast as you think they do - or a Saturday when there's a football match? All these things need taking into consideration.

Most tell you to not be late - Church or Civil Ceremony, some have a little bit of wiggle room (by about 5 minutes!) but remember with a Civil Ceremony chances are the registrars will have to leave to go and officiant at another Wedding elsewhere, if you run too late you run the risk of not getting married at all.

When you leave the ceremony, and you are heading for reception drinks (or before you head to the car) your guests will want to speak to you, say hello and how wonderful you look and how happy they are for you. This is normally what your receiving line is for before the meal to thank everyone for coming - but it normally happens at this point in the day too - even if you haven't planned the time for it.

Depending on how long you have before you sit down to eat, the amount of guests, and also how many group photographs you are wanting - this is time that needs to be managed efficiently. The food cannot be put back, and depending on what you are having for dinner you cannot have anything that is over-cooked.

Whilst this time is when you want to get the beautiful pictures, but also mingle with your guests. Take this into consideration when you are choosing how many group pictures you would like. And always try and leave at least 30 minutes for photographs of you as the happy couple! Sometimes you are only given 1.5 hours at some venues (sometimes more, sometimes less) and sometimes that "minute" you would like can really impact on what you can and cannot get photography wise.

Getting people sat down for the Wedding Breakfast is the hardest thing - and most venues will want your guests about 15-minutes before the meal is due to be served. If you are having a receiving line find out what time they will want you for this from the end of the ceremony / arriving at the venue - as this will impact on the above.

The happy couple is announced in - but this means that whilst Cousin or Uncle has run to the Bar, and Auntie is at the loo - it slows things up as you will not be announced in until all your guests are seated.

Venues normally say that a 3-course meal for approximately 100 Guests should take 1.5 Hours. This can be pushed to 2-hours but a lot try to stick to the almost "30 minutes per course" which is plenty of time.

These too can either happen before or after the Wedding Breakfast. After is more traditional, however, it depends on how nervous people are for speaking.

You never really know how long people are going to speak for. I have had speeches for 20 minutes (Dad, Best Man, Groom), and I've also had them last over an hour. If you have them before dinner - some bellies may start to grumble!

The one thing with the evening reception I find that gets pushed back is normally the first dance. A lot of people plan to have it between 7:30-8pm - but if not a lot of evening guests have arrived, or some family members aren't back from their rest-time then people don't want to do it. I find that most people are doing their first dance between 8:15-8:30pm with a Cake Cutting just before - and then partying on before the evening buffet starts around 9pm.

Lots of different things can happen - and can cause your day not quite to go to plan - but it's knowing about them and trying to stick within timings the best that you can.

Here is a simple run-down of timings for example

Obviously timings will change a little bit depending on venues etc. If you are getting married at 12 - in a Civil Ceremony then it gives you the afternoon to do additional photographs depending on Bad Weather or some bad mishap (like a car breaking down!) that meant some photographs couldn't be done.

I hope you find that this helps with your timings and Wedding Planning :)

[#WOW] Meet Debbi from Vintage Headdresses

Today we welcome Debbi who got her #WOW for her Vintage Headdresses and I have to say they make me go WOW too! The idea for her business came when she was planning her own Wedding and was struggling to find unique headpieces with vintage touches. I'll pass you over to Debbi to tell you more.

Can you tell us a little about yourself as a person?
I am happily married to my childhood sweetheart, and we have a 20 year old black & white cat called Katy. I am passionate about travel, particularly to the South-West US, which is my favourite area of the world to visit. I love to hike, particularly on my local beach. I also love to read (mainly crime thrillers as an ex-lawyer!).

How did you first set up the business?
When planning my own wedding, I had struggled to find unique, beautiful and well-made headpieces with vintage touches. I had been making jewellery as a hobby for years so I decided to change my focus to creating one-off headpieces, incorporating carefully sourced authentic vintage pieces. I loved it so much I knew it was what I wanted to do for a living.

How old is the business?
5 years old

Did you ever think you’d be running your own business?
Actually no, not when I was younger! It's funny, but my parents were sole-traders and originally wanted me to follow in their footsteps selling children's wear, but I saw how how much hard work and long hours went into being self-employed, and chose to study law instead. However, after several years my heart just wasn't in it, and I learnt that I much prefer being creative and earning my living doing something that I am absolutely passionate about. The long hours fly by when you love what you do!

Where are you based? Do you have a shop or are you just online?
I live in Lossiemouth, on the beautiful Moray Coast in Scotland. I work from my home studio and retail online through both my website and my Etsy shop.

What is the most popular product sales wise?
In the past few years my Great Gatsby inspired headpieces have been incredibly popular. The shaping takes inspiration from the headpiece worn by Daisy in the recent film, but each one of mine is unique and created from authentic vintage pieces.

Everyone has a favourite product - what is yours?
I have a particular passion for the art deco era and love to source the most beautiful rare pieces from the 1920's - 1930's. My favourite headpieces are the ones I make from these intricate, highly detailed pieces.

What is your newest item / product?
Some of my latest headpiece designs include an intricate floral silver & gold hairvine, and a dramatic drape headpiece with sapphire blue accents.

What is the one thing people must know about your business?
Every design is a one-off piece, totally unique and never to be repeated. I love that when brides wear one of my headpieces - they know that they will never see the same one at another wedding; that it is completely unique and special to them.

What is your proudest business achievement?
I never forget what an honour it is when brides choose me to create their headpiece for one of the most special days in their lives. Receiving beautiful photos and wonderful "thank you's" from brides after their wedding will always be the very best part of my job - it never fails to make me proud of what I do.

What do you do when you aren’t working on the business?
I remain obsessive about jewellery making and am currently learning new silversmithing techniques for fine jewellery. I am also learning Latin American Spanish!

What five words describe your business?
Vintage, unique, creative, quality, love.

Any big plans for 2015 you can share?
I am planning to create more headpieces with touches of colour, as this is something that can really make a design come to life!

How can we find out more about you:

Oh my goodness I absolutely LOVE the hairvine (and I don't normally like gold!)

[Bridesmaid Dresses] Hues of Blue

If you decide that you want your bridesmaids in some form of Blue, then head to the high street as there is definitely something out there for you.

Navy is a colour I see a lot - and it's not just for winter weddings, team Navy with something bright flower-wise and it will look classic throughout the months.

Saying that, however, if you are having Navy for a "Winter" wedding then have a look at this dress from Quiz. This Navy Chiffon Embellished Maxi Dress would look beautiful for a November / December or January Wedding!

This cute skater length Navy and White Dress is lovely and fun for a Spring or Summer Wedding. Team with some bright or nude heels and flowers - and you have summery bridesmaids for under £25!

One of my favourite dresses that could be used as a bridesmaid dress is this Navy Pleated Maxi Dress from H&M. A flattering shape for most shaped Bridesmaids, and giving coverage where needed, I am more than certain your bridesmaids would look stunning in this dress.

Add some sparkle to your Wedding with these Sparkle Maxi Dresses from Tesco whilst you are doing your Weekly Shop.

Another beautiful dress from Tesco, is this high neck pleated dress for £50 in Navy yet again.

With Navy being one of the more popular colours, let's not forget the other beautiful shades of blue which are out there.

This beautiful cornflower blue and lace bustier dress is available from Topshop. In sizes 10, 12 and 14 this would look beautiful in a pastel and vintage themed wedding.

Another lace top dress, but with a nude full skirt is available from Next for £70 and then New Look do a Navy / Nude contrast dress available in two different styles.

Pleats seem to be a big hit on the high street this year - and this Grecian Wrap Dress from Topshop is no exception. Online this looks more like a silver/blue but would definitely suit a winter wedding.

If you are wanting your bridesmaids to have a bit of sparkle - then this embellished maxi dress in a mid-blue is lovely. Strapless dresses are something that can be used for every season, but you may want a wrap if you are having winter bridesmaids strapless.

And last but not least something brighter. I would personally class this as Cobalt Blue, and a bit of sparkle too!  No need for jewellery heavy jewellery in this dress. Simple beautiful.

I am sure you can see, that if you are looking for a bridesmaid dress on the highstreet, then maybe you need a bit of blue in your Wedding!

[Bridesmaid Dresses] Silver & Grey to go with any colour on your Big Day!

Choosing colours for dresses can be a little bit of a struggle, and sometimes a colour you love may not suit the bridesmaids you have chosen, so how about going for something with Silver or Grey?

Tesco Multiway Maxi Dress
Silver & Grey work well for a lot of different hair and skin-tones, and blend in lovely with other key colours in your Wedding. Grey's work well with pastel colours, as well as bright bold colours so the choice is endless.

Here are some of the Grey & Silver Dresses that are on the high street to prove that you don't need to spend lots to find your bridesmaid dresses.

This dress from Tesco is £50 and is a Multiway Maxi Dress, what is great about this dress, if you have different shapes and sizes of bridesmaids then you have the ability to be able to mix and match so each bridesmaid can wear the same dress in a different style!

Elise Ryan Maxi Dress

Another lovely dress, and great if you want your bridesmaids to wear strapless dress is this Elise Ryan Maxi Dress that includes a Jewel Trim Waistband. This dress is normally £65 on the Dorothy Perkins Website and is currently (at the time of writing this blog) at only £48.75!

Pop along to Asda, and find this Grey Embellished Maxi Dress for only £35! Available in sizes 8 to 24! Amazing for a range of sized bridesmaids!

Another one to head over to is Quiz for this Lace mesh detail dress at £69.99 not too low a neck, but will hide a multitude of sins too for the self-conscious bridesmaids.

There are so many different designs you could have, but bridesmaid dresses under £70! Perfect - Especially if you are having a big Bridal Party!

[Wedding] Sunshine on a Rainy Day, Sally & Karl at Cubley Hall Penistone

On Sunday, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Sally & Karl's Wedding at Cubley Hall, Penistone.

As the Tour-De-Yorkshire was on, I set off early to Tankersley Manor, where the bridal preparations were starting. Myself and the florist turned up at the same time - this is really where things started to get real for Sally!

Herself and family members were split over two rooms, which was lovely as hair was being done in one, and make-up in another, giving precious time and chill-out zones were needed.

We were later joined by flower girl Ruthie before we all set off in a convoy of cars to go to Cubley Hall where the bridal preparations would finish.

Once at Cubley, it was nervous tummies and bubbles flowing as now it really was getting real! The bridesmaids wore gorgeous lace short navy blue dresses with a deep v back, where Sally opted for a long lace overlay and tulle bottom dress with a beautiful made to measure rhinestone bridal sash. Just stunning!

Due to the weather (it had been raining that morning!) the wedding was unable to happen outside - so was in the Barn inside - which I personally love the rustic look and fairy lights!

Sally was walked down the aisle by her Dad, to Karl and his best man who were waiting for them down at the bottom. Not many people had dry eyes - but the smiles on Karl and Sally's faces showed everything they needed to.

After the short but sweet and personal civil ceremony, Sally and Karl walked out to "My Girl" full of love and happy smiles. Not only that - as they made the way outside - we had sunshine!

"I've got sunshine on a cloudy day..."

After a bit of a mingle and drinks the newly married couple headed outside for photographs with family and friends before we were able to work with them as a couple. I love working with the couple when they are on their own for that 5 minutes they get in peace and quiet and can see how they really connect.

The room at Cubley looked beautiful when it was set out and ready for the Wedding Breakfast, with a main meal of a very yummy Carvery!

The had decided on a bottle and chalkboard table plan which was made up using different bottles from handcrafted beers - something that Karl loves. For instance, the top table was Weird Beard Brew Co.

Each table had candles and a beautiful arrangement of flowers - with a beermat with the table names on. Fabulous and I've never seen it before! I love seeing new things at Weddings!

After the meal was over the speeches began. First of all by Sally's Dad, then by Karl and then the Best Man finishing it off with a lovely poem he wrote.

Speeches made lots of laughs, jeers and tears from everyone.

After Dinner, and now it was brighter and a little bit dryer, we headed back outside for the confetti shot - and a couple of more too. I love it when the light changes and we are able to get some lovely shots in lovely, soft light.

I want to say a massive thank you to "The Moff's" for allowing me to share their special day. We had such a laugh - and the guests definitely had a very good boogie on down - and I'm pretty sure it continued long after I had left.

[Wedding] And the Bride wore Jimmy Choo's, Steph & Mark, Waterton Park Hotel

On Saturday 2nd May 2015, I had the wonderful Job of photographing Stephanie & Mark's Wedding at Waterton Park Hotel, Wakefield. I love photographing Weddings here, as the surroundings are just so beautiful and definitely make for some lovely photographs.

I started with Steph and her bridesmaids getting ready after they had stayed over the night before.

The morning was quite chilled out, the ceremony was at 12-Noon and hair and make-up started early, which meant that the bride and bridesmaids were done in plenty of time - and all they needed to do was get dressed.

Steph wore a gorgeous lace sweetheart neckline dress, with a lace bolero over the top finished with a crystal embellished belt which looked absolutely beautiful and finished the look off entirely.

I headed downstairs to the Ceremony room, with the aisle filled with rose petals, and Mark nervously awaiting the arrival of Steph. Steph was walked down the aisle by her Dad.

The ceremony was beautiful, with three different readings by friends and family, which made it all that much more special and personal for them both. Civil Ceremonies can be over so-so quick, so this made a nice change.

Being May Bank Holiday Weekend, you can never guarantee the weather, and this day was no exception. With rain hitting on and off - we managed to jump outside for all the photographs which made it a lot better. The guests were super quick at doing what was asked as they all wanted to get back inside to the warmth and away from the hit and miss drizzle. A* to the guests!

With time to spare and the weather bating just a tad, we were able to stay outside for the couple portraits - even when it started drizzling a bit heavier Steph was game for getting the pictures done!

We headed around the back of the Venue and onto the decking, but not before almost being attacked by Geese! Which wasn't as funny as it sounds, but it was just protecting the nest we were stood near!

The new Mr & Mrs then headed upstairs to the beautifully set out room. Pinks and lace and flowers adorned the tables, with a beautiful cake to top it all off!

Laughs, and tears were had during speeches, and dancing and laughter continued throughout the evening reception too.

Thank you to Mr & Mrs Jackson for choosing me to share your special day with you.

[#WOW] Meet Gabbi from Humble & Maker

Gabbi is behind Humble and Maker which started life as homemade gifts. Gabbi is a wife to Nathan and only started Trading in 2014! Here is more about her business and why it is a #WOW story!

Can you tell us a little about yourself as a person?
I have been married to Nathan for 6 years, and we share our city centre terrace house with our cat Izzy; an adorable bundle of fluff who thinks she is a human! I love to knit, though rarely make anything for myself! I make a mean brownie and aside from making, I'm happiest at the seaside or in the dance studio!

How did you first set up the business?
Friends started having kids, and I quickly fell into making homemade gifts to welcome them to the world. I also found that reconnecting with my creativity helped me relax and gave me a great sense of achievement. Having started a craft night with a group of girlfriends, I started thinking about one day having a space that the community could use to try their hand at making something new. This led on to setting up Humble & Maker, creating kits which provide all the materials and instructions that you need to make something gorgeous with confidence! The kits are supplemented with stitch tutorials and we have also added a selection of designer fabric to purchase by the meter.

How old is the business?
We just started trading in November 2014!

Did you ever think you’d be running your own business?
No - I always thought setting up businesses was something that someone else would do, but never me!

Where are you based? Do you have a shop or are you just online?
I run Humble & Maker from our Lancaster home, so our website is our main shop front. I am also fortunate enough to have some of our products in bricks and mortar stores in the centre of Lancaster and Morecambe; Fruits of the Lune, Lancaster and 13 The Warehouse, Morecambe.

What is the most popular product sales wise?
Our Baby Booties kit!

Everyone has a favourite product - what is yours?
The booties - they were the first kit developed and I will always have a soft spot for them!

What is your newest item / product?
3D printed cufflinks

What is the one thing people must know about your business?
We are big on reusing and reducing waste. Our completed products fit back inside the tubes ours kits come packaged in so you can give your finished item as a gift - our product label even doubles as a gift tag!

What is your proudest business achievement?

I can't believe where the business has come in such a short time, and being selected at one of Jacqueline's WOW winners (especially after just 1 tweet!) is pretty special!

What do you do when you aren’t working on the business?
Pilates, ballet or watch the latest series on Netflix!

What five words describe your business?
Crafty. Innovative. Eco-friendly. Great fun!

Any big plans for 2015 you can share?
